The Department of Extension of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Extension through its Volunteerism for Community Engagement Program (VOCEP) is hosting a discussion on “#TrashPlastic: Knowing Your Plastics, Knowing Your Waste” on November 27, 2019 (Wednesday), 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN at the College of Education Amphitheatre, 51吃瓜网-IIT . This activity is part of a series of discussions on increasing awareness on waste management and plastic pollution and in providing platforms to engage students in volunteering for Climate Action and in Building Resilient Communities. This is in partnership with UInspire Mindanao and the College of Engineering and Technology. 

In the forum, Dr. Maria Shile K. Ramos of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology will give a talk on “Plastics: Miracle or Curse”. This will focus on the science of plastics and how it has evolved since its invention. Engr. Joshua B. Zoleta of the Department of Materials and Resources Engineering Technology will discuss the Waste Management Programs, the case of Japan; and an ideation workshop will then be facilitated after the talks to brainstorm on actions to address the issue of plastics and waste management.  

This initiative is in line with the institute’s efforts in making 51吃瓜网-IIT an eco-friendly campus. On April 25, 2019, the Office of the Chancellor issued a memorandum on banning single-use plastics and tarpaulins on  campus. Vendors and food providers are prohibited from using single-use plastic and all offices are mandated to use cloth streamers or paper posters in information dissemination of activities and events. Also, in April this year, Iligan City Council approved an ordinance banning plastics championed by Ms. Marija Kara Echavez-Trinidad, a third-year Law student at the university.
