THEME: Re-inventing the Future of FAB LABs Through Stronger Industry Engagements
DATE & TIME: August 5, 2020 9AM-11AM, Philippine Standard Time August 4, 2020 9PM-11PM, US Eastern Standard Time FAB LABs (Fabrication Laboratories) all around the world have always excelled as educational and community spaces that deliver a productive environment for individuals and organizations to develop prototypes while empowering people of all ages to engage with advanced technologies. Most FAB LABs like the one in the Philippines have thrived in using the operation model of being a technology access center and training provider for innovators, small businesses and researchers. Most of the 25+ FAB LABs established by the Philippine government, as well as private institutions are democratizing access to digital fabrication tools by training its users on digital design and operations of the common digital fabrication suite which includes 3D printers, laser cutters and computer numerically controlled milling machines. Industry engagements of advanced FAB LABs follow the operations model of being a service bureau which industries as long-term clients outsource their prototyping research and development functions to FAB LABs. This online panel discussion will explore how FAB LABs can be leveraged as service bureaus through sustainable industry engagements. The panelists will share their experiences in managing contracted projects or research and development engagements with industry partners and how these models can be applicable to Philippine FAB LABs.
