The theme of sustainability has been around for decades but, in recent years, evolutions in multiple aspects of society have enabled a convergence of activities to steer various efforts towards the vision of sustainable development. In this webinar, we will cover some manifestations of this convergence which include: (1) the articulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), (2) the 6 th Wave of (Technological) Innovation highlighting the need for reconfiguration around present environmental and social needs, and (3) Society 5.0 - aspiring towards a human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social problems by a system that highly integrates cyberspace and physical space. The ongoing global transformations (e.g. digitalization, equality, health, energy, food/land/water/oceans, cities/communities, etc) have already begun to gain momentum. In support of a positive shift towards sustainable development and practices, stakeholders from the government, industry, and academe must also align themselves not only with their programs, projects, and other activities, but primarily with their mindset. We are now a more interconnected world and thus, hopefully, can approach sustainability in a more united manner. The role of Institutes of Higher Learning (such as Universities) is crucial to the successful uptake of sustainability, i.e. impregnating teaching/instruction/education; research, development, and demonstration; extension/outreach; collaboration/partnerships; and all other possible activities with the mindset of sustainability through an inclusive, holistic and progressive development ethos. |
