A key principle of the adoption by 193 United Nation Member States of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is its promise to ‘leave no one behind.’ They go on to say that they will ‘endeavor to reach the furthest behind first’. While we acknowledge that there has been progress made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, it is undeniable that not much has changed in the treatment of LGBTQ+. In celebration of Pride Month and as part of the SDG Mainstreaming Project’s aim to increase awareness of the youth about the Sustainable Development Goals, we move on to the 3rd installment of the SDG Talk Series on the common struggles the community faces in defining, expressing, and understanding one’s own gender identity and sexual orientations. This SDG Talk will spark a discussion about why bias against the LGBTQ+ community persists, as well as the critical necessity for the LGBTQ+ community to be explicitly included in advancing and reaching the target global objectives. This will be accomplished by highlighting the community's common challenges with defining, expressing, and comprehending their own gender identities and sexual orientations, as well as dealing with how their surrounding environs view them, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. |
