Rationale: Rapid industrialization comes with it the systems that deplete the natural environment and devastate communities through unsustainable use of resources, mismanagement of industrial and business operations, and various forms of human exploitation. In this age, the effects of human activity are becoming paramount and have urged communities to call for urgent action. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals as part of the UN’s 2030 Agenda include 2 vital pillars of sustainable development: (1) Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and (2) Sustainable Cities and Communities. As the UN describes, (1) aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation while (2) aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. While certain actions and innovations are being made to confront these issues, sustainability criteria in terms of industrial and community development remain unclear. To discuss the effects of human activity is crucial in reshaping what we know about the conventional design of human settlement and the known concepts about sustainability that could cause more harm than good. The fourth installment of the SDG Talk Series, which is part of the SDG Mainstreaming Project to promote awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals, examines what a people-centered, sustainable, and resilient society looks like at the local level amid the climate crisis. The episode also aims to contribute to the transformation of communities and initiate a meaningful discussion on what measures the local community, especially the youth, can do to participate in the UN’s 2030 Agenda. |
