The Excitable Dynamics in the Directed Migration of Physarum polycephalum

When: Wednesday, October 06, 2021 02:00 PM-04:00 PM
Where:

via Zoom

Description:

The College of Science and Mathematics Research and Extension Moments (CREM) is a monthly webinar series of the College where faculty members share their completed/on-going research and extension projects and plans.

In this webinar, Dr. Rosario L. Reserva, a faculty member of the Physics Department, will share about an experimental observation and simulation study on the dynamical behavior of a brainless but smart organism called Physarum polycephalum. In her talk, she will explain that polarity and directional sensing are tightly coupled coordinated processes leading to spike dynamics in the nodes configuration of the plasmodial network during chemotaxis. A modified technique on particle microrheologoy was employed in her study to demonstrate the correlation of the 3D dynamics of the embedded beads on the elastic gel to the oscillating dynamics of plasmodial cell during directed migration.
