SDG Talk 5: #BreakingtheBias: A Conversation on Gender and Climate Action

When: Wednesday, March 30, 2022 04:30 PM-07:00 PM
Where:

via Zoom and FB Live

Description:

Rationale:

Climate change and sustainability challenges have had, and will continue to have, significant and long-term consequences for our environment, economy, and social development. Those who are most disadvantaged and marginalized bear the brunt of the consequences. Women are increasingly being recognized as being more vulnerable to the effects of climate change than men, because women make up the majority of the world's poor and are more reliant on the natural resources that climate change threatens.

Women and girls, on the other hand, are effective and influential leaders and change-makers in the field of climate adaptation and mitigation. They participate and lead in sustainability efforts all across the world, resulting in more effective climate action. For sustainable development and greater gender equality, it is critical to continue to study the opportunities, as well as the restrictions, to enable women and girls to have a voice and participate equally in decision-making on climate change and sustainability. A sustainable and egalitarian future is out of reach without gender equality today.

This panel discussion aims to:

  • Discuss what is climate crisis and its gendered impacts, emphasizing how women and girls are disproportionately affected;
  • Discuss how local communities are involved in climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as how women and girls are involved; and
  • Identify barriers and opportunities for gender equal climate action  in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Upcoming 2022 Elections.
