Project RISE begins training program for Grade 2 Teachers on Early Literacy and Lesson Design

by The Project RISE Team | Dec 09 2025

Last November 15, 2025, at the ICT and WordLinks Lab of the College of Education, Project RISE, in partnership with DepEd Iligan, officially launched its training program for Grade 2 teachers from the 10 partner schools. The program, “Enhancing Early Literacy: A Training on Reading and Pedagogy and Instructional Materials Development for Grade 2 Teachers,” marks a significant step in strengthening early literacy practices in public schools.

The training is designed to deepen teachers’ understanding of core reading and literacy subdomains while equipping them with evidence-informed classroom strategies to help young learners develop into confident and joyful readers. Each session blends foundational theories with hands-on workshops, giving teachers opportunities to reflect on their practices and collaboratively design lesson plans and instructional materials aligned with next year’s implementation.

The first session also welcomed Grade 1 teachers, who joined to listen to Asst. Prof. Therese P. Abonales, a writer and literature teacher from the Department of English, College of Arts and Social Sciences. In her talk, “Lighting Young Minds: Cultivating Readers through the Power of Literature,” she emphasized the centrality of curiosity in literacy development, reminding teachers that “You have the power to make them [the pupils] more curious.”

By the fourth session, held last Saturday, December 6, 2025, teachers successfully completed their first lesson plan—the first of 28 lesson plans that will be developed for Grade 2 learners for the next school year. Each lesson plan is anchored on a selected storybook and aligned with the MATATAG Curriculum, ensuring coherence, relevance, and a strong focus on learner-centered teaching.

This work was guided by the RISE Team: Asso. Prof. Shelanee Ruales, Prof. Ruben Abucayon, Asso. Prof. Onnah Pierre Talle, Prof. Rizalina Gomez, Prof. Ciedelle Grajeda, and Asso. Prof. Jay Roel Semilla, who delivered his lecture online from KU Leuven.

To celebrate this milestone, the Grade 2 teachers received storybooks donated by Teacher D’s Learning Hub of Cotabato City, another valued partner of Project RISE committed to nurturing a culture of reading in young learners.

This is just the beginning. With eight more sessions scheduled until February 14, 2026, the RISE Team and partner schools continue to work together toward a shared vision: literacy, creativity, and empowered learning for every child.
