Mindanao State University (51³Ô¹ÏÍø) Board of Regents (BOR) has officially appointed retired Professor Franco G. Teves, Ph.D., as Professor Emeritus, recognizing his 41 years of exemplary service to the university.
The decision came during the BOR’s en banc meeting on December 9, 2025, at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-Marawi, after a rigorous evaluation by the Iligan Institute of Technology (51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT) Campus Academic Promotion Panel (CAPP).
Teves, from the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, earned top marks across the CAPP’s Professor Emeritus Evaluation Matrix, achieving a total score of 272.5 points—well above the threshold.
His academic credentials include a B.S. in Medical Technology (magna cum laude, Silliman University, 1980), an M.S. in Microbiology (University of the Philippines Los Baños, 1988), and a Ph.D. in Microbiology/Molecular Genetics (UP Los Baños and Universidad de León, Spain, 2001).

He chaired the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT COVID-19 Task Force, led biorisk assessments across campuses, and served on key committees like the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM) Council. These contributions earned perfect scores in categories for sustained university service (10/10) and meritorious educational impact (15/15).
Research Excellence and Teaching Prowess
A prolific researcher, Teves authored or co-authored 16 ISI/Scopus-indexed papers, six international non-ISI journals, and five national CHED-accredited publications.
His work spans mercury-resistant bacteria, dengue vector control, DNA-binding compounds, and biosurfactant genetics, with standout presentations at national and international conferences. He delivered eight invited lectures in prestigious Philippine venues and one subplenary at an international event.
In teaching, Teves shone with student evaluations averaging 99.14% and peer evaluations at 95.91% over four semesters. Five former students provided glowing testimonials, praising his mentorship.
He also developed courses like Futures Thinking, Biorisk Management, and standardized BS Biology (Microbiology) curricula. Awards include third prize at the 2010 PNHRS Best Oral Paper Competition and first place in the 2012 Outstanding Asian Biodiversity Publication (Genetics category).
51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT Chancellor Alizedney M. Ditucalan hailed Teves’s “unwavering dedication” in advancing science education and innovation in Mindanao.
“This appointment cements his legacy as a pillar of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT’s academic and research mission,” he added.
