Engineering students explore cement manufacturing at Holcim Lugait Plant

Apr 28 2026

Thirty-seven (37) engineering students from 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT participated in a two-day industrial immersion from April 16–17, 2026, at the Holcim Philippines Lugait Plant. Organized under Project Atlas: Engineering Immersion & Career Launchpad, the activity exposed students to the real-world intersection of various engineering disciplines within large-scale industrial operations.

A highlight of the event took place on the second day, which focused entirely on seventeen (17) graduating Mining Engineering students and five (5) faculty members from the BSEM program. Their comprehensive plant tour demonstrated the direct link between quarry operations and cement manufacturing, effectively bridging the gap between raw material extraction and industrial production.

Through technical discussions and guided tours, participants observed key production stages, from material handling and crushing to blending, heating, and final product formation. The students also visited the Quality Assurance laboratory to learn about the strict testing standards that guarantee cement quality. Furthermore, interactive booths introduced them to the Commercial and Marketing sectors, as well as the Geocycle department’s sustainable waste management solutions.

“This experience allowed us to connect what we study in mining with its actual application in industry,” one student shared, noting how the exposure deepened their appreciation of the field beyond extraction.

While the second day offered a highly specialized dive into mining and processing, the first day of the immersion established the event's multidisciplinary foundation. It brought together Chemical, Electrical, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering students, giving them a comprehensive look at how diverse industrial systems and engineering fields collaborate to keep plant operations running smoothly.

Ultimately, by tracing the journey from the quarry to the processing plant, the Project Atlas initiative successfully immersed students in industry practices, safety protocols, and career opportunities.

The Holcim Plant Tour underscored the vital role of these sectors in sustaining essential industries, equipping future engineers with both the technical insight and the broader perspective needed to contribute to nation-building.
