Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT) joined over 600 higher education leaders at the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Universities Summit 2026, hosted by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from April 22-24, 2026.
The summit, themed around Asia’s leadership in global innovation and “scalable solutions” for climate, health, and urban resilience, provided a powerful platform for 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT to deepen its international engagement and affirm its identity as a leading research-intensive university from Mindanao.
51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT was represented by a four-member delegation who listened in plenary and thematic sessions on Asia’s innovations for tomorrow, engines of scalable solutions, and Asia’s emerging rulebook for the future.
Attending the summit were Prof. Joey Genevieve Martinez, Vice Chancellor for International Affairs; Prof. Rosario Reserva, WE CARE Office Director; Prof. Neil Martin, Internationalization Lead of the College of Health Sciences, and this writer.
Across the three days, the team joined networking activities, engaged in strategic conversations with university leaders and experts, and compiled a preliminary list of institutions for possible collaborations in research, dual and joint degree programs, and faculty and student mobility in the areas of innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation.

For the first time at this summit, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT operated its own strategic exhibition booth, transforming it into a hub for conversations on partnership and impact. The booth showcased the University’s flagship academic programs, research and innovation outputs, internationalization efforts, and sustainability initiatives, positioning 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT as a Philippine university ready to collaborate on global challenges from its unique Mindanao context.
Delegates from across Asia visited the booth to learn about 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT’s strengths as a leading science and technology institution, receive institutional materials, and explore concrete opportunities for cooperation. The team also used the space to invite participants to the ICUNSSI 2026 conference, gather expressions of interest from potential partners, and strengthen recognition of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT among regional and global higher education leaders.
The summit’s program examined how Asia is redefining progress through breakthrough science, entrepreneurial energy, and universities’ growing influence over global standards for AI, education, and innovation. 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT’s delegation actively participated in sessions under the themes of innovation, impact, and influence, taking careful note of best practices in governance, quality assurance, sustainability, and international collaboration shared by leading Asian universities.

These engagements deepened the delegates’ understanding that successful universities deliberately align research, teaching, and internationalization with broader societal needs, especially in digital transformation, climate action, and inclusive development. The summit underscored that visibility and reputation must be anchored in substance—robust governance, strong quality assurance systems, and a clear narrative about institutional strengths and contributions.
Beyond formal sessions, the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT team used the summit’s networking spaces to explore collaborations with universities and organizations across the region. On the final day, the delegation was able to schedule two focused collaboration meetings with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Faculty of Engineering and School of Nursing, discussing potential joint activities targeted for September 2026 or sometime in 2027.
These conversations, alongside other initial contacts made during the summit, yielded a preliminary pipeline of partner institutions and agreed next steps for follow-through in research collaboration, mobility programs, and possible dual or joint degree initiatives. The summit experience highlighted that meaningful international partnerships are increasingly built around co-designed research agendas and carefully structured academic programs anchored on shared priorities and mutual benefit.
Participation in the THE Asia Universities Summit 2026 affirmed 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT’s commitment to positioning itself as a research-intensive university from Mindanao that champions inclusive, sustainable, and innovation-driven development. The insights gained—on scalable solutions, sustainable futures, and Asia’s rising influence in global higher education—offer actionable inputs for curriculum reform, research prioritization, partnership development, and capacity building.
By maintaining a visible presence through its booth and a fully engaged delegation, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø-IIT signaled its readiness to stand alongside Asia’s leading universities in shaping humanity’s future through education, research, and collaboration.
